This should work on all newer Windows OS's such as Win 7 (x86 and 64bit) or Vista: Requirements (Freeware): 1. Download and install VM Player 2. Download and unpack MS-DOS 6.22
- This package contains DOS 6.22, QBasic 1.1, QuickBasic 4.5 QuickBasic Extended 7.1 and VisualBasic for DOS
Start VM Player and run MS-DOS 6.22; when asked whether it was copied or moved, select moved. Now you'll have four options: 1. Run QBasic 1.1 (Interpreter only):
- Simply type in: "qbasic" (always without quotes) and hit [ENTER]
2. Run QuickBasic 4.5 (Compiler):
- type in: "cd qb45" - [ENTER]
- type in: "qb" - [ENTER]
3. Run Quickbasic Extended 7.1 PDS (Professional Development System) aka QBX:
- type in: "cd qbx\bin" - [ENTER]
- type in: "qbx" - [ENTER]
4. Run Visual Basic for DOS:
- type in: "cd vbdos" - [ENTER]
- type in: "vbdos" - [ENTER]
Have fun

MS-DOS6.22 is a password protected RAR file. The readme file gives a site where you must first complete a survey before you can get the password. I tried it but the survey just hangs. I too now have a couple of Meg download which is no use to me. I am now looking around for other downloads although I do have MS-DOS 6.22 and QB4.5 which I bought ages ago. It would also appear as if VMware has now become a trial program being open source but apparently shareware and not freeware.
VMWare is available as a download on btjunkie.org and I think a copy can be downloaded from Sourceforge so I will check it out for MS-DOS 6.22 and the other programs bundled in the MSDOS622.RAR I will report back

I tried downloading VM Player twice. On both occasions after 70 Meg the download stopped with the message that it could not read the file and I could not find any way to report it. I don't have enough bandwidth to waste it on aborted downloads. The MS-DOS 6.22 link for the password still just hangs and does not go to the survey. A number of VMware versions are available from btjunkie.org but how legal the copies are I do not know. Apart from MS-DOS 6.22 I see that all the other programs in the packet can be downloaded from this site under Downloads. I think that FreeDos is a better option than MS-DOS 6.22. It does everything MS-DOS 6.22 does and more. It is 32 bit and uses FAT32 and can handle quite large Harddrives. You can Google Freedos and then download it. It is definitely a free download. Regarding the survey this is the second program where a link refers you to the same site for a password on completion of a SURVEY. Alas it did not work for the other program either and also just hangs.

Will the Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade work for computers with Mac software? I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my computer right now. It was pre-loaded on the machine. I'd like to upgrade it to Windows 7. I am also planning on buying a Mac. Will I be able to load the Windows 7 upgrade version on that also? Thanks in advance for your help. ____________________________ market samurai ~ marketsamurai ~ marketsamurai.com

Daniel.. (and others).... It looks like the DOS-6.22 problem is not yet a final solution, and the original post issue unresolved. Does anyone have an idea for obtaining and installing Qbasic to run in XP, WIN7, or MAC environments?

Pablo See the post "Quick Basic for Windows 7 (Without : Final Solution). DOSBOX 0.74 runs Quick Basic and other DOS 16 bit programs on XP, VISTA and Windows 7 (both 32 and 64 bit). There I have also indicated an IDE that can be used for setting it up. You can get more information from www.dosbox.comFreedos is an excellent replacement for MS-DOS 6.22.

I've been using DOSbox 0.74 to run QB 7.1, for almost a year now, on both a 32-bit WinXP and a 64-bit Win7 machine. Both work very well, except you do get a performance hit comped with running natively on the 32-bit WinXP machine. (Of course, in the 64-bit Win7, native is not an option.) You also get the added benefit of SOUND coming out of the speakers, instead of the little tiny built-in speaker, and you also get the benefit of seeing the graphics windowed, instead of always full screen, as was the case in WinXP and older. You can set DOSbox to full screen, though, if you choose to. Also, if you set the screen correctly when running natively, QB could display 50 lines of text in the screen, instead of just 25. To get 50 lines displayed when using DOSbox, you have to load the proper font first, in the "autoexec.bat" equivalent in DOSbox, before running QB. Here is a great font choice: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=27615Go to the bottom of that page, and download the 8X12FONT.ZIP file. Unzip, then load the 8X12_50.COM file in the DOSbox options, before you start QB. (The part of the options that basically emulate the old AUTOEXEC.BAT file in DOS.) This is the choice that works right with QB. The others do not, and default back to 25 lines displayed. I've just started looking into QB64. The download claims 22 hours, even though by downlink speed if almost 50 Mb/s. So that's ridiculous. I'll try again elsewhere.

By the way, the reason I'm looking into QB64 may be obvious to most people, but maybe not.
If you compile your QB program, as I often do, the .exe file will only run on 32-bit Windows machines, natively. So if you send the file to someone with Win7 64-bit, that person will need to run the executable in a VM, like DOSbox. It runs fine that way, but I'd prefer to be able to send .exe files without a long list of insrtructions!

I'm a newbie with a new Windows 7 computer. I followed the instructions, survived the survey, and got my virtual machine running DOS and qbasic as described. But this virtual machine is shut off from the rest of my computer. So, for example, "DIR *.*" only lists the "local" files and drives - I can't see files on the rest of my computer or on my external hard drive.
How do I communicate from this virtual machine to get my basic files loaded?
